When the Northern Illinois Fiero
Enthusiast called to let Tim Dye, director of the Pontiac
Oakland Museum know they were coming his way for their 2014
Spring Cruise he wasted no time in declaring it “Fiero Day”.
The day quickly went from a NIFE event to an official
Midwest Fiero Clubs event. Many NIFE members gathered in
Bolingbroook IL so they could cruse down historic RT 66.
Others set out from Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana and met the
rest of the group in Pontiac IL. After parking in the
parking spots that the town of Pontiac saved for us we
started the afternoon with lunch at Delong's next to the
museum.
There we were greeted
by a representative from the town of Pontiac who
gave each of us a goody bag. After lunch Tim had
arranged for us to tour the “behind the scenes”
garage belonging to the museum where we saw
several restorations in progress.
Also part of the tour were several
privately owned barns stuffed with antique and
classic cars, many with unique distinctions. The
town of Pontiac helped out by using the town's
trolly bus to move us from location to location.
In addition to all of the Fiero memorabilia that
the museum had on display, NIFE member Fred
Bartemeyer Jr. brought many items from his
personal collection as well. Besides the smaller
items he shared the ultimate collectable his
museum piece, the Pace Car Number three was parked
in front of the museum.
After a full day of touring
the Pontiac Oakland Museum as well as the many
other museums located in Pontiac many of the Fiero
owners choose to stay for Pontiac's first cruise
night of the season. As guests of the town and the
museum the entry fee was waved for these fiero
owners. The night saw a couple hundred cars of
various makes and style show up. It's great that
we have a resource like the Pontiac Oakland Museum
that's so close to home. Even better is great that
it's located in a town that's as friendly as
Pontiac Illinois.
